Callaway looking to clinch All-Star bid in Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La. - Defending Division 4 Top Alcohol Dragster Champion Lee Callaway will be looking to accomplish another career first during this weekend's Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at State Capitol Dragway in Baton Rouge, La. Callaway is only one round away from clinching a position on the Division 4 Jegs Sportsman All-Star team.

Callaway, from Baytown, Texas, needs only to qualify for the event to clinch the All-Star bid. The Jegs Sportsman All-Star event is held in conjunction with the NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway just outside of Chicago, Sept. 25-28, and pits the best competitors from each of NHRA's seven geographical divisions in a head-to-head race. Despite only having to qualify to clinch, Callaway and his team have their sights set on much higher achievements, however.

"We feel pretty good about this weekend," said Callaway. "We seem to have a handle on the problem that caused so much parts breakage during the first part of the season. We really focused in on the oiling system, and worked on that area. With that out of the way, we can get back to stepping on the tune-up. This Chuck Haase' car really seems to do well on the marginal tracks; it hooks up so hard. I think that gives us an advantage at some of these divisional races."

Callaway, who is currently third in Division 4 standings hopes a strong showing this weekend will put him back on top of the pack.

"We need to do good this weekend to get back into the points hunt," stated Callaway. "We were in about this same position last year, and made a charge during the middle of the year to win the Championship. That's what we hope to start again this weekend."

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars, followed by two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
