Callaway looking to regain title in '04

ENNIS, Texas - One point. It's a point that has been on NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Lee Callaway's mind all winter. One point was the margin that kept him from winning the Division 4 Championship to Shelly Howard last year. The 2002 Champ is ready to start his quest to regain the title during this weekend's Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series opener at the Texas Motorplex just south of Dallas.

Callaway, from Baytown, Texas, feels the team made positive strides at the end of the year, and hopes to continue that trend this weekend.

"We really started to get after the car at the end of the year last year, and the car responded well to it," said Callaway. "We ran very close to our career best numbers at the national event in Dallas, which was our last event. Hopefully, we'll be able to pick up where we left off since we're racing at the same track."

Callaway also has his sights set on the remainder of the year.

"We really have our sights on getting the Division 4 title back," stated Callaway. "With our budget for this year, that's really all we can afford to chase. If we could find some more sponsor support, we could make a run for a strong national finish, but we would rather spend the money we have available to be competitive on the local level rather than string it out to race a bunch of nationals. We're actively seeking more sponsor support."

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars, with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
