Callaway gets his 'mojo' back in Memphis.

MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Defending NHRA Division 4 Top Alcohol Dragster Champion Lee Callaway got his 'mojo' back as he put it by taking a runner-up finish during this past weekend's Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Memphis Motorsports Park. Callaway had not made it to the final round since last year's event at No Problem Raceway in Belle Rose, La., and feels his team is back on track with this weekend's showing.

Callaway, from Baytown, Texas, cites his team's decision to get more aggressive lead to their regained success this weekend. The team did not limit their antics to the track, however. In their attempts to regain their 'mojo,' crew chief Stacy McLemore donned black frame glasses much like Austin Powers, in addition to crewmember Robert Aldrete backing Callaway up in the final wearing a large 'afro' wig.

Callaway qualified his Tom Conway tuned machine sixth with a 5.464 at 257.43 mph. In round one, he defeated former Division 2 Champion Michael Gunderson with an off and on the throttle 5.701 at 252.14 mph. In the semifinals, Callaway defeated No. 2 qualifier Brian Badgett with a 5.534 at 256.75 mph. In the final, Callaway squared off with another former division champion, Jeff Wilson of Division 3. Callaway gave close chase with a 5.475 at 258.71 mph, but was not enough to catch Wilson's 5.395 at 256.50 mph.

"I think we got our mojo back," said Callaway. "Seriously, we finally just got after the tune-up, and that's what got the car back into the 5.40's. We had a good time this weekend, and went some rounds. With as much work and money it takes to do this, you have to be able to have a good time doing this. We obviously wish we would have got the win, but coming into this weekend, we had only run in the .40's once, and made three runs in the .40's this weekend. We are finally starting to tap the potential of this Chuck Haase' car, and there is a lot more left in it, so I guess that's why we are so upbeat despite not getting the win. As Austin would say, we'll be back, baby"

Callaway's next event will be back at his home track of Houston Raceway Park for the O'Reilly Spring Nationals. There the team will try to improve on their Memphis showing.

"I think we should be able to jump right out in the 5.40's," stated Callaway. "I think we should be able to improve from there, depending on the conditions."
