Line Quickest in First Round of Eliminations Will Wait Until Monday as Rain Halts Race
Jason Line blasted his Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro down the Maple Grove Raceway quarter mile today in 6.482 seconds at 213.64 miles per hour – second quickest lap in history – to win his opening-round match, but thanks to on-and-off again rain, has to return Monday for completion of the 28th annual NHRA Nationals here at Maple Grove Raceway.
The run, which puts him in a second-round match with teammate Ronnie Humphrey, marks the fifth-consecutive race round Line has run here in the 6.4-second range, encompassing the four at last year’s event, including the record 6.477 pass.
Line, who had qualified on the pole for the race, predicted the possibility of quick runs based upon predicted weather conditions.
“If it gets into the 50s, we could reset the record (6.477 seconds, which he set under similar weather conditions at last year’s race here),” he added.
A record brings 20 bonus points, which could be crucial in his chase of Allen Johnson, who leads Line by approximately five rounds in the NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship. Johnson, like Line, won his first-round race.
