MURRAY, MARTIN LEAD QUALIFIERS AT ROUTE 66 RACEWAY

JOLIET, Ill. -- In the opening rounds of qualifying at Route 66 Raceway's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Scott Murray, Winnipeg, Manit., set the pace in Top Alcohol Dragster and Beaver Falls, Pa., racer Bobby Martin leads in Top Alcohol Funny Car. So far, there are 12 TAD and 15 TAFC vying for a spot in Sunday's eight-car eliminations field in each class.

Murray laid down a 5.350-second, 257.63 mph pass to put him ahead of the competition. Today's No. 2 qualifier, Noah Condo of Monticello, Ind., is just off the pace with a 5.392-second, 265.43 mph pass. At the end of qualifying, reigning North Central division and TAD national champion Bill Reichert finds himself in the No. 11 spot after a 16.470-second run.

Martin's 5.638-second, 258.71 mph pass was just enough to put him ahead of former division champ Mick Snyder, Demotte., Ind., who ran 5.686 seconds at 256.60 mph. The No. 3 and 4 qualifiers, defending division titlist Daniel Wilkerson, Springfield, Ill., and Chicago's Fred Hagen, ran 5.687 seconds and 5.688 seconds, respectively.

Bruno Massel, Woodbridge, Ill., wheeled his '08 Cobalt to the top of the Comp Eliminator field while Jeff Gilman, Marne, Mich., took his '05 Firebird to the No. 1 spot in Super Stock. Stock Eliminator racer Chuck Beach, Delaware, Ohio, went to the top of the field with his '68 Barracuda. Terre Haute, Ind., racer Tom Stultz heads up the Top Sportsman field and Mike Wharram, Morton, Ill., is No. 1 in Top Sportsman. The best qualifier in the exhibition Pro Stock Snowmobile category is Ron Bray, Anoka, Minn., on his '07 Ski Doo.

Racing continues Saturday and Sunday at Route 66 Raceway. Gates open at 7 a.m. both days. Final qualifying and time trials will continue at 9 a.m. Saturday. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will have two qualifying sessions, at 5 and 8 p.m. The Pro Stock Snowmobile exhibition qualifying is slated for 6 and 9 p.m. Eliminations start Sunday at 8 a.m. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 12:45 to be followed by first round of eliminations for Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car at noon.

            Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at
Route 66 Raceway are $19 Saturday and $21 Sunday.  A two-day ticket is
$32.  Children 12 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.
