Langdon tiptoes down Firebird to qualify 10th at Arizona Nationals
PHOENIX (Oct. 15) – Track temperatures at Firebird International Raceway soared to more than 130 degrees on Saturday, but the Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster driven by Shawn Langdon danced its way down the strip to qualify the third-year pro in 10th at the NHRA Arizona Nationals.
"With a track that hot, it's going to be anyone's ballgame," Langdon said. "I'm really looking forward to what may happen. This car has a tradition of good performance in hot weather."
Langdon's best lap of the weekend was a 4.014-second pass at 295.59 mph.
"That was a really good run considering the way the track was," Langdon said. "The car really wanted to wear the clutch through real bad. Everything else seems good. The motor seems happy and my lights have been a little better this weekend."
Langdon squares off against Rod Fuller in the first round on Sunday. Fuller, who qualified seventh, had a best lap of 4.007 seconds at 300.20 mph.
"We're just going to have to get some consistency back in the car," Langdon said. "The whole day is going to anyone's ballgame.
"We're probably going to be second pair out in the morning, and those will be the best track conditions we'll see all day. We'll need to start off strong and carry that momentum through the afternoon."
