If You Build it They Will Race

ACTON, MT. -- Yellowstone Drag Strip, located in Acton sits 3 miles into the beautiful open fields of MT., which roared out drag racing action this Saturday. The smoke has dissipated and the fields have been set at the Summer Championships. In Top Alcohol Funny Car, Clint Thompson of Klamath Falls, Ore., will go into tomorrow's eliminations in the No.1 spot. Top Alcohol Dragster pilot Jim Whiteley of Grand Junction, Colo., stunned the field with his pass of 5.484 seconds at 264.13 mph leaving him atop the charts.

Whiteley's performance tomorrow will be crucial in his attempt to win the Lucas Oil National Championship. Currently Whiteley is leading the nation in points with a total of 562, however only 4 points behind him sits the defending champion Bill Reichert.

Thompson will be the man to beat in Top Alcohol Funny Car but the first round matchup that everyone will be watching is No.4 qualifier Brian Hough of Junction City, Ore., who is paired up against Sean O'Bannon from Ontario, Calif. Hough and O'Bannon currently hold the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in the chase for top spot in the division and this matchup will play a huge roll in who ends up on top at the end of the season.

In the Comp Eliminator class, Wheatridge, Colo., resident Lou Ficco sits atop the qualifying ladder with a time of 7.474 seconds in his '04 Cavalier. His nearest competitor is Clint Neff of Arvada, Colo., who's pass of 8.206 seconds landed him in the No. 2 spot. Peter Boslovitch, who hails from Lockport, Manit., set a time of 11.946 seconds, in his '80 Malibu which was good enough for the pole position in the Stock Eliminator class.

Sean Cour of Brush Prairie, Wash., piloted his brand new '08 Cobalt to the No.1 spot in Super Stock with a time of 9.476 seconds, which was .021 seconds faster than his effort yesterday, both were pole setting efforts. In Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson, Billings, Mont., resident Pete Loomis jumped off the line aboard his '02 Kawasaki with a reaction time of .011 seconds which put him in the No.3 spot. In the pole position was Leeland King of Shelton, Wash., who nailed the tree to get himself a class best reaction time of .003 seconds.

In the Auto Max USA Top Sportsman class Dave Slatten of Ft Collins, Colo., drove to a top speed of 196.96 mph keeping him on top with a class best time of 7.108 seconds. The No. 4 and No.5 spots in the Top Dragster category were occupied by two Mont., natives; Jeff Bailey of Kalispell in the No.5 position and Yellowstone Drag Strips own Ron Omo from Billings in the 4 spot. The top spot in the class was awarded to Clif Bakx of Grunthal, Manit., who seems to be a step above the rest. His time of 6.468 seconds at 206.73 mph was almost three tenths faster than anyone else in the class.

Racing continues Sunday at Yellowstone Drag Strip. Racing kicks off at 10 a.m., and tickets are $25. For more information, call Yellowstone Drag Strip at 406-861-RACE or visit them on the web at www.yellowstonedragstrip.com.
