GORDON, DEMKE WIN; SET TRACK RECORDS

FALLON, Nev. -- Doug Gordon laid down a record setting run in the final round of Top Alcohol Funny Car to take the win at this weekend's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Top Gun Raceway for Octane Fest in Fallon, Nev. The Paso Robles, Calif., racer drove his MB Cabinets funny car to a lap of 5.962 seconds at 244.42 mph to beat No. 1 qualifying Brain Hough and set both the elapsed time and mph funny car track records at Top Gun.

Gordon is coming off a big win last weekend in the JEGS Allstar's event held at Route 66 Raceway outside Chicago. Hough qualified at the top of the field at 5.991 seconds, 241.11 mph but slowed in the finals to a 6.009, 242.78.

"What a great 2-weeks!" voiced Gordon after the final round. "The track is really coming around. The track has done a great job of the racing surface. I think we could have thrown more at it."

In the Top Alcohol Dragster final it was Chris Demke of Sunland, Calif., coming from the No. 2 qualifying position to out run No. 1 qualifier Thomas Bayer with a 5.621 second lap at 258.79 mph. Demke's final round mph was a track record to go along with his elapsed time record of 5.578 seconds set earlier in the day. Both records were previously held by Bayer's crew chief and car owner Steve Federlin.

Reno, Nev., resident Brad Rounds took home the hardware in the Super Stock class running his '01 Chevy truck to a 9.913 second lap at 133.13 mph over John Borden of Redlands, Calif. Last year's runner up in Super Stock Steve Wann ran both Super Stock and Stock this weekend taking the win in Stock in a heads-up race against Kyle Rizzoli. Wann of Modesto, Calif., drove his '74 Dart to an 11.380 second 115.36 mph pass to Rizzoli's 11.854. Wann ousted his Dad Don in his semifinal match up.

Fan favorite and local racer Jim Grace of Fallon, Nev., ran down David DuBose, also of Fallon, in the final of the Pro ET class. Grace went 10.244 seconds at 132.33 mph in his '69 Camaro to DuBose's 12.681, 106.57.

With a pair of nostalgia dragsters in the final of Comp Eliminator it was J.D. Zink winning over former National Champion Dean Carter when Carter broke in an earlier run and was unable to make the final round of eliminations.

In the Super categories it was Aaron Kinard of San Marcos, Calif., winning over Greg Boutte of Stockton, Calif., in Super Comp; veteran racer Rick Beckstrom won in Super Gas with a 10.332 second, 163.71 mph over Barry Willoughby; and Vallejo, Calif., runner Chris Bracey won in Super Street for her first ever NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing event win.

Rod Hartzell held off Geneva Nash for the Hughes Performance Top Dragster win with a pass of 7.839 seconds, 165.68 mph and Val Torres Jr. drove a barrowed car from Dale Cox Jr. to the win in the Sunset Racecraft Top Sportsman class. Torres ran 7.856 at 177.55 mph in his '08 Cobalt over Dean Hall in his Korbel Champaign '63 Corvette running 7.972, 176.87.

Joining in on the winner circle festivities was Ron Gledhill in Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson out of Taylorsville, Utah, with a 9.291 second run at 122.06 mph on is '07 Hayabusa.

Pacific Division racers head to Infineon Raceway for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, August 1-3.
