UPS TOP FUEL DRAGSTER DEBUTS AT NHRA WINTERNATIONALS
POMONA, CA. (February 12, 2006)- Bob Vandergriff Jr. debuted his new UPS Top Fuel Dragster this weekend at the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, CA. The Jim Dupuy tuned dragster fell just short of making the field on it's maiden voyage.
"We had only six weeks to prepare the car for the fast paced NHRA season opener," explains a dissappointed Vandergriff. "We were only able to put three laps on the car before arriving here in Pomona. The team worked tirelessly to get the car, parts and trailer in order before driving nonstop from Atlanta to Las Vegas to test before the Winternationals. We have the big picture in mind. We are continuing to learn every day."
"I'm very excited about being able to bring UPS into the NHRA drag racing arena. It took 18 months of work to get to this stage. We missed qualifying by .002 of a second. I'm very proud of the team and how the car ran. If we had 20-30 laps like most other teams, we would probably be in a different position right now."
"We are making progress," explained crew chief Jim Dupuy. "We didn't hurt the car or any parts. It's still a learning curve with the new car and equipment. We are going to Las Vegas tomorrow to make some more laps and acquire more data to work from. Our team is a family, and I'm glad that we could stay together." Dupuy refers to his team who chose to stay in tact and joined with Vandergriff Jr., after Joe Amato retired and sold his operation.
Aside from getting back to his passion of drag racing, Vandergriff was thrilled to announce that UPS has become the official express delivery company of NHRA. UPS will set up full-service UPS Trackside Services on-site at all NHRA national events, beginning with the Phoenix event.
"I gave my thanks to the team," shared Vandergriff. "I reminded them that it is not how we start the season, it is how we finish."
After they finish testing in Las Vegas, Vandergriff and the team will move on to Firebird International Raceway in Chandler, AZ., for the Checker Schucks Kragen Nationals on February 24-26.
