CHEVROLET NOTES AND QUOTES AUTOZONE WINTERNATIONALS NHRA WINSTON DRAG RACING SERIES POMONA RACEWAY, POMONA, CALIF. MONDAY, FEB. 8, 1999

PRO STOCK TRUCK - CHEVY S-10

RANDY DANIELS, DANIELS RACING CHEVY S-10, defeated BRAD JETER, JETER RACING CHEVY S-10, in the Pro Stock Truck final today, held over from yesterday's rained-out event. This was Randy's first Pro Stock Truck win in two final round appearances in two seasons. He won it with an elapsed time of 7.652 seconds at 175.55 mph to Jeter's 7.705/176.28. Jeter has one win in three final round appearances, the Winston Finals here last fall.

LARRY KOPP, SPEEDCO TRUCK LUBE CHEVY S-10, held on to the national and track e.t. record, 7.586 seconds.

DANIELS: "We didn't get enough sleep last night. We were really nervous about the race track. I tossed and turned thinking about this day, whether it would be raining, whether we would run or not." ON HIS FIRST WIN: "It's something we have waited for for so long. It's as great as I thought it would be. It's a big morale booster, maybe we can carry this thing through the season." DID YOU THINK IT WOULD TAKE THIS LONG TO WIN ONE? "Actually it took longer than I thought it would. I thought last season we would pick up a win. I thought once we picked up the power in the engine we might win one." DOES THIS WEATHER DELAY CLOUD YOUR EXCITEMENT? "Not at all, I'm still just as tickled as if it were today or Sunday." ON THE PRO STOCK TRUCK TEAMWORK: "Yesterday when we thought we had a starter go out on the S-10 Tim Freeman and Mark Osborne stopped and gave us a hand. We owe a lot to the guys back in the pits, all of the racers who helped us." ON THE GROWTH OF THE SERIES: "Right now there are more trucks on the road than there are cars. I think it's really exciting for the fans. We got a lot of cheering, even though there were few fans in the stands. There was still a lot of excitement." WHY THIS SERIES? "We like the small-block (engine) and the shorter schedule for our budget."

JETER: "Lane choice had a little to do with it, but I think for the most part we under-estimated the track. We didn't figure the track would be nearly as good as it was. We just didn't make a real good run, that was the bottom line." ON THE SLOWER REACTION TIME: (.522 for Jeter, .466 for Daniels) "I had a terrible light, for me it was a terrible light. I knew at about 60 feet we were in trouble. I could see him beside me, he was in front of me. It's just one of those days. I think we would have had a little different outcome if we could have raced yesterday. Yesterday we were prepared more than today. Today was a whole other race track to tune for and the weather conditions. Most of the time the track is not that good; the track turned out to be awesome today. But we're happy to get to the finals. What we set out to do this year is to make as many final rounds as possible. That gives us points for the end of the year towards the championship. That's what we're after. It will be a long year. There's still plenty of time."
