Qualifying order of the day for David Baca at Pomona,

POMONA, Calif. -- In the final event on the 2002 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series schedule, David Baca, from Brentwood, Calif., will be putting his Henkelman & Baca Motorsports Prolong/Waterloo/303 Protectant Top Fuel Dragster through four qualifying runs for the NHRA Auto Club of Southern California Finals at Pomona Raceway this weekend.

Baca's first professional competition in Top Fuel was less than two weeks ago at the NHRA AC-Delco Las Vegas Nationals when he missed the field by just 14 thousandths of a second. The second generation driver is cautiously optimistic about his chances for the upcoming season final.

"Crew chief Wes Cerny is putting in a lot of overtime readying two car for Pomona," said Baca, partner and team owner of Henkelman & Baca Motorsports, which fields not only the Top Fuel dragster that he drives but a second dragster driven by teammate Cory McClenathan. "He is not only attempting to insure that I make the field at Pomona but that Cory has the most competitive car that we can have for this weekend's Budweiser Shootout and for the final event. I would like nothing more than to see Cory jump back into the top five in points.

"As to my hot rod, if we can pick up from where we left Vegas, I think we'll be right in the thick of things. The numbers were very competitive at the last event, especially the potential numbers on that final pass when the engine let go. We feel that we have the problems corrected that we incurred at Vegas, especially the front wing problem, and things should be better for us here at Pomona.

"Wouldn't it be something to have both Cory and I do well. If we could get on opposite sides of the ladder, maybe we could meet in the final round. Wouldn't that be awesome. Right now though my goal is to qualify and put on a good show for all our marketing partners who have supported this car for the final two races."
