Dixon Looks To End Season on High Note, While Making Darrell Russell Auction a Success

POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 8, 2004) - Larry Dixon is a three-time winner at historic Pomona Raceway and driving his Don Prudhomme-owned Miller Lite dragster to the winner's circle at drag racing's season-finale will be Dixon's ultimate goal when the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series stages the 40th annual Auto Club of So. Calif. Finals, Nov. 11-14, at the L.A. County Fairgrounds. While Dixon's racing approach will be the same, he also will be focused on making the Darrell Russell Memorial Auction a success.

After Dixon's friend and racing colleague Darrell Russell was killed in a high-speed racing accident in late June, Dixon and his wife, Allison, came up with the idea of an auction as a way for the drag racing community to remember Russell and to raise money for his wife, Julie. After months of planning and gathering items from all walks of the racing and sporting community, the Dixon's will see their project come to pass on Saturday, Nov. 13 at Pomona Raceway.

"I have the same mindset going into any race, but the Finals will be different this year because we want to make the auction a success," Dixon said. "The main objective behind the Darrell Russell Memorial Auction is to have an event to celebrate Darrell's life. If people are there and get involved, it will be a success. The other goal is to raise as much as possible for Julie (Russell) and do our part to help out."

Dixon and his racing friends might be fierce rivals when they strap into their 7,000 horsepower dragster or Funny Car, but when tragedy hits, the racing community rallies to support and aid the victim's family. The Darrell Russell Memorial Auction is just one of many ways that the NHRA family has joined for a greater cause after Russell's passing.

"I hope that people feel the same way that I do about the situation," Dixon said. "I hope the weather is good and that people show up. We've done as much as we can to help make the auction a success. Now, it's just a matter of everyone showing up."

There will be more than 200 items up for bid on Saturday at Pomona Raceway. Most items will be available via a silent auction from 3-6 p.m., while 50 or 60 big-ticket pieces will be auctioned off in the Hospitality Village at 6 p.m. Longtime NHRA announcer Bob Frey will host the auction and most NHRA stars will be in attendance. NHRA will open the Pomona Raceway gates for those that want to attend the auction at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

"We have a lot of really great items," Dixon said. "The racers from the various sanctioning bodies have been very gracious. The sponsors have done the same. NHRA has been great in letting us have the event at their race as well as opening the gates to all fans who want to attend. Everyone has had open arms in helping out. I think it will be a real fun event.

"There are probably a dozen items that I'm interested in and I'm going to do my part to help Julie by bidding. I hope others do the same."
