POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 11, 2004) - Two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon opened qualifying Thursday at Pomona Raceway by driving his Miller Lite dragster to a pass of 4.598 seconds at 320.43 mph to claim the provisional No. 8 qualifying position at the 40th annual Auto Club of So. Calif. Finals.
Dixon, a three-time winner at Pomona Raceway, used a tune-up from champion crew chief Dick LaHaie to power his Don Prudhomme-owned rail to the 4.598, 320.43 run on his first of four scheduled qualifying attempts this weekend at the historic Southern California drag strip. Dixon qualified fifth at this event last November.
"We got down the track on our first pass and that's always the objective," Dixon said. "There were some really great runs in that session, but we're not in a position to try and fire off a shot like that."
The 35-time NHRA winner aims to move further up the Top Fuel order when qualifying resumes Friday at 3 p.m. (PT). There also are two qualifying sessions scheduled for noon and 3 p.m. (PT) on Saturday, Nov. 13.
ESPN2 will broadcast two hours of qualifying coverage from the Auto Club of So. Calif. Finals at 10 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, Nov. 13 and show three hours of final eliminations coverage at 6 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, Nov. 14.
