Johnson Jr. Energized To Finish 2004 Season With a Solid Performance at Pomona

POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 8, 2004) - Pomona Raceway has been referred to as the 'Mecca' of drag racing, and Southern California has long been considered the birthplace of the sport. Race cars of all sorts have been speeding down the Pomona Raceway quarter mile for more than five decades. Therefore, the excitement meter peaks a little higher when the world's top drag racers convene upon the Los Angeles-area track.

Those stars of straight-line racing will return to Pomona Raceway, Nov. 11-14, for the 40th annual Auto Club of Southern California Finals to complete the 2004 NHRA campaign at the very same race track where the season began some 10 months ago.

"It's a bittersweet race because everyone is tired and needs a break, but on the other hand, you don't like to see the season end," Tommy Johnson Jr. said. "When you're not running as well as you'd like to, you want to keep going because you'd still like to accomplish some things. I'd like to end the season on a high note. That's our goal for the weekend. We're in better shape now then we have been at any other point in the season.

"We start and end the season at Pomona, which makes it a fun place to race. The Southern California crowd is always really good. My racing hero Marvin Graham will be there and I enjoy seeing the old school guys from the early days of racing."

Many stars from drag racing's yesteryear, including Graham, will venture to the historic Pomona Raceway quarter mile to watch today's Funny Cars and Top Fuel dragsters blast to four-second, 320 mph passes on the legendary strip. Johnson, who recorded a career-best elapsed time and speed this June, is anxious to get behind the wheel of his blue Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo and try and eclipse those marks that he recorded near St. Louis.

"We worked the bugs out of the new chassis and it's all good to go for Pomona," Johnson said. "We stayed on Monday at Las Vegas and got the car running pretty good. So, I'm happy with the way things are going with our program heading into the Finals."

Johnson and his Skoal Racing team may be happy entering the event, but with a solid qualifying performance and a good outing on race day, they could be ecstatic for the entire winter off season.
