John Lingenfelter Drives GMC Sonoma To Front Of The Pro Stock Truck Pack

POMONA, Calif., Nov. 9, 2001 - John Lingenfelter's GMC Sonoma took the No. 1 qualifying spot today during the second round of Pro Stock Truck time trials at the 37th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals at Pomona Raceway.

Lingenfelter's Summit Racing GMC climbed to the top of the qualifying ladder with a track-record elapsed time of 7.431 seconds at a track-record top speed of 181.59 mph. Currently 11th in the Winston Pro Stock Truck standings, the renowned Decatur, Ind. engine builder is looking to capture his second consecutive pole position. He was the No. 1 qualifier at the last Pro Stock Truck event in Dallas.

"We ran a little bit quicker than we thought we'd go," said Lingenfelter.

"We knew this Sonoma had something left in it after yesterday's run because we didn't leave very well even though we were very strong on the back half of the racetrack. Normally we're not the quickest on the backhalf but we were on the first run yesterday. We were hoping for good things today.

"We made a few changes to the suspension since we had spun the tires hard on the starting line. We adjusted the tuning and made some minor alterations to our shock settings. It's nice to be in the No. 1 spot because it puts us in a positive mood going into the last day of qualifying and eliminations on Sunday. It definitely puts you much more at ease when you're not struggling all the time.

"We were in a different lane today, but the track seemed slightly better for us and we don't know if our improvement was because of the changes we made or if the track got better."

Randy Daniels is the No. 2 qualifier in a Chevy S-10, Taylor Lastor is qualified third, Craig Eaton is fourth and Scott Tidwell rounds out the top five.

There will be extensive television coverage of the NHRA Finals this weekend. ESPN will broadcast two hours of qualifying coverage on Saturday, November 10, beginning at 4 p.m. Eastern. The Budweiser Shootout for Top Fuel dragsters can be seen on ESPN2 on Saturday starting at 11 p.m. Final eliminations can be seen on ESPN2 on Sunday, November 11, beginning at 7 p.m. Eastern.
