TEAM MISSES OPPORTUNITY IN ELIMINATIONS READING, PA - The clutch woes continued for the Columbia, MD based fuel Funny Car team of Bob Weickgenannt and B & B Racing. Qualified 15th for Sunday's eliminations at the Keystone Nationals, the team ran the Winston car of Whit Bazemore in the first round. The B & B entry had been plagued by difficulty with the clutch setup all weekend and, like many teams, only managed to get one solid pass down a very difficult Maple Grove track.
As Weickgenannt left the line in the Variform, Velux and Tenneco sponsored entry, it only made it about 200' down the track before the car got out of the groove and spun the tires severely, going up in smoke. The race was over as Bazemore completed the pass in a 5.01 second elapsed time to Weickgenannt's coasting 10.320 second 82 MPH run.
"We continue to make progress with the car and team," said Weickgenannt. "It would be nice to go some rounds on Sunday, though. This is the third event in a row for which we've qualified, which is a tribute to the crew we have working on the car. We'll be back in Memphis and we'll try and put it all together at that race." The next event for the team will be the Pennzoil Nationals in Memphis, TN October 8 - 11.
