THE LARRY DIXON EXPRESS ROLLS THROUGH PENNSYLVANIA FOR 12TH WIN OF 2010
MOHNTON, Penn. (Oct. 12, 2010) -- Once a locomotive gets in motion, it's a hard thing to stop.
So too is the emergence of Top Fuel drag racer Larry Dixon in the race for the NHRA's Top Fuel championship. Dixon won the NHRA event at Maple Grove Raceway and leads his category's standings in the Countdown to One title struggle.
Dixon was one of four drivers who raced to glory on Goodyear tires at Maple Grove. The others included Cruz Pedregon (in Funny Car) and Dave Connolly (Pro Stock) in the Full Throttle Drag Racing Series for professionals and Steve Szupka (Competition Eliminator) in the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series for sportsmen racers.
Dixon, a two-time Top Fuel champ, won his final round in a dramatic pedal fest against his closest pursuer in the championship chase, Cory McClenathan. Both drivers were on and off the throttle during the race but Dixon got traction first and won his 60th national event. It was his 12th win of the season and he now leads the standings with 2,544 points. McClenathan is second with 2,455.
Matt Hagan set a national Funny Car record with a 4.011-second pass in qualifying and, obviously, was the top qualifier in the category. But no top qualifier has ever won at Maple Grove in Funny Car and Pedregon beat Hagan in the final round. Hagan leads the standings with 2,442 points. John Force is next with 2,378 and Fast Jack Beckman is third with 2,349.
Connolly beat the surging Greg Anderson in the final round by the slimmest of margins. The official margin of victory was .0011 of a second. Unofficially, tracksiders estimated the margin at about four inches. Anderson, a three-time champ, now leads the Pro Stock standings with 2,438 points. Defending national champ Mike Edwards is second with 2,402 and Greg Stanfield is third with 2,353.
Szupka scored his first win in a national event, beating Frank Aragona Jr. in the final.
