PRO STOCK TRUCK -- CHEVY S-10 -- AFTER SECOND ROUND OF QUALIFYING

BRAD JETER, KARL CHEVROLET S-10, is No. 1 qualifier following two qualifying sessions, 7.527/178.28. He ran the 7.527 in the first session, then backed it up with a 7.583-second pass in the second on a brisk and windy day. If he leaves this event with this record, he will earn 20 bonus points.

JETER: "It feels real good. The wind didn't affect us as much. I don't think 170 mph is fast enough for the wind to affect you that bad." WHAT DOES THE NATIONAL RECORD MEAN TO YOU? "It feels great to have both ends of thenational record right now. We set the speed record at Gainesville at 179.09 mph. We have been trying to get the e.t. to go with that, so it feels pretty good. We worked pretty hard over the winter on some things and it's paying off now." THIS SHOULD BENEFIT YOU IN POINTS. "I made a mistake there in Houston. I was a little tardy at the starting line, we cost ourselves a few rounds. The (extra) points are great, it takes just that much more off at the end of the year." ARE THESE PERFECT CONDITIONS? "I think the conditions were great to run some very good numbers. That second session we could have run a .48 or .49, but we ran through the clutch a little, so that didn't happen, as you could see. We're a little disappointed with that. All in all, I am happy to back up the record with a .58, but that's not what I was looking for." WOULD THESE CONDITIONS BE ALMOST PERFECT? "I would have to say so. I think it was minus 300 feet (altitude) that time, and that's the ultimate track conditions. The track can hold what you can throw at it right now. The bump spot is a .63. We've never had a bump spot that low. That in itself will tell you how good the conditions are." ON THE TIGHT COMPETITION THIS YEAR: "I think it's good, I think it's good for the fans to where you don't have a big separation. It's going to be a driver's race. It's going to come down to who can leave the starting line and who can't. You have to tune to the race track. Hopefully we can be on top on Sunday afternoon. If I keep my head screwed on straight I think I can do it. I've brought people in to keep my head focused. Roy Hill for one. I think he will get me right back on track. My first light was a .460, so I should be right up where I used to be.

JERRY HAAS, TEXAS HARLEY-DAVIDSON CHEVY S-10, is No. 2 qualifier, with a 7.534-second lap at 178.21 mph. Jerry is running a Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins Chevy V8 engine this weekend, borrowed from Larry Kopp.

HAAS: "I am overwhelmed. I am just astounded that Bill Jenkins' motor runs so nice. That's the second pass on it and we still haven't got a combination. I turned it too high in the first three gears, 2, 3 and 4, and in fifth gear it was moving around a little bit. I plugged it into fifth way too eary. If I did my job driving it's a possibility that I would be on the pole. I am No. 2 and I'll take that, and it's a lot better than I was last race (DNQ)." HOW DID YOU GET THE JENKINS ENGINE? "Larry Kopp saw I was down in Houston and he came over and offered me his engine and I think the world of Larry Kopp and Susan to give me an opportunity to put the engine in my Chevy S-10 and show everybody that, first of all, we found where our problem was, and two, to run as fast as we did. I'm so overwhelmed and I can't thank them enough." WILL YOU CONTINUE TO RUN THIS ENGINE? "Larry and I are going to have to romance a little bit. I will run this engine for this race. I haven't made a decision yet, I'll let you know later." ON DOING SO WELL HERE: "My crew Jimmy (Guenther) and Jeff (Lawson) did an excellent job tuning the S-10. They're doing a fantastic job. We put a different type of motor in there and and went out there and ran that fast. It's up to me to drive it, shift it at the right time and see how fast it can really go. We have one more run of qualifying and we will see where we can take it."

LOU FICCO, CHEVY S-10, set a track speed record of 178.42 mph.

MARK OSBORNE, RCL COMPONENTS CHEVY S-10, winner of the last two events, is No. 4, 7.539/178.26.
