BENHAM, STOKES AMONG EARLY MORNING WINNERS AT MEMPHIS MOTORSPORTS PARK
MILLINGTON, Tenn. -- The final racers in the NHRA South Central division's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series rolled through the lights at the end of Memphis Motorsports Park's quarter-mile at about 1:30 a.m. today. It marked the end of a two-day race, scheduled at night to avoid the July heat, in which more than 400 cars took to the track. In the end, Comp Eliminator racer Scott Benham, La Grange, Texas, carried his No. 1 qualifying effort to the winner's circle where he joined Super Stock competitor Mike Stokes, Hopkinsville, Ky.
Benham wheeled his '05 Sunfire to the win over Springdale, Ark., resident Michael Johnson in his '03 Cavalier. Benham made an 8.643-second, 148.79 mph pass to Johnson's 8.902-second, 150.35 mph pass.
Stokes covered the quarter-mile in 8.919 seconds at 152.24 mph in his '05 Cavalier but got the win at the starting line when Todd Ewing, Cullman, Ala., behind the wheel of a '94 Achieva, red-lighted.
Red Bay, Ala., resident Jeff Strickland wheeled his '95 Camaro to the win in Stock Eliminator over Larry Stewart, Clinton, Miss., in his '02 Firebird. Super Comp racer Steve Evans, Moore, Okla., beat Clint Dishman, Bruce, Miss., in the final when Dishman red-lighted. Reigning Super Gas national champion Sherman Adcock Jr. of Fortson, Ga., won his first race of the season in the category when he beat Mike Fuqua, Hendersonville, Tenn., in the final. In Super Street, Don Strickland, Red Bay, Ala., drove his '67 Chevy II to the win over Regan Wilson, Tyler, Texas in a '69 Chevy pick-up. The win in Top Sportsman went to Matthew Buck, Lantana, Fla., in a '96 Firebird over Bert Prejean, St. Amant, La., in his '06 GTO. Monroe Guest, Mannford, Okla., grabbed the win in Top Dragster, defeating Chris Bermond, Bay St. Louis, Miss., and in Sportsman Motorcycle, Randal Guitreau, Prairieville, La., rode his '75 Kawasaki to the win over Harvey, La., resident Craig Treble aboard a '01 Hayabusa. Treble also competes in Pro Stock Motorcycle in NHRA's PowerAde Series.
South Central division racers head to Red River Raceway for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. The Gilliam, La., facility will host the series September 12-14.
