JOHNSON JR. DRIVES TO FIRST-ROUND FINISH AT SEATTLE

KENT, Wash. (July 23, 2006) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. drove his Don "the Snake" Prudhomme-owned Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to a first-round effort Sunday at Pacific Raceways during the 19th annual Schuck's Auto Supply Nati! onals.

After qualifying in the No. 9 position with a 4.931-second elapsed time, the seven time NHRA winner was pitted against No. 8 qualifier Tony Pedregon. Johnson used a stout .055 of-a-second reaction time to jump the Skoal Racing flopper to an early lead, but Johnson's Monte Carlo lost traction and slowed to a pass of 5.651 seconds at 207.08 mph, while Pedregon raced his Chevy to a run of 5.029 at 260.81 to earn the round win. It marks the first time in four races that Johnson did not advance to the semifinal round of eliminations.

"Unfortunately, we picked a lousy time to have a tough weekend," Johnson said. "We just never got a hold of this tricky track this weekend. I really thought we had a good run going. We had the jump out of the gate and then the car, uncharacteristically, smoked the tires further down track than normal. It caught me off guard. It's been tough the past two weeks with the heat. I'm looking forward to getting to some good race tracks."

The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the 19th annual FRAM-Autolite Nationals, July 28-30, at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.
