VISTA, CA (August 7, 2003) - In response to recent accidents involving our race team vehicles, Don Prudhomme Racing would like to issue the following information in order to provide the latest, confirmed information and to dispel any misinformation that may be circulating throughout the news media.
On the evening of Monday, August 4, the Skoal Racing technology tractor-trailer was involved in a two-vehicle collision in Iowa. Skoal Blue Racing crew members Mark Warnick and Robb Hauser were en route from last weekend's race in Sonoma, California to Snake Racing's shop located in Brownsburg, Indiana. The accident occurred when the technology tractor-trailer struck an abandoned van parked alongside the highway, resulting in the trailer coming to a stop in a ditch along the roadside. Neither Warnick nor Hauser were injured in the accident.
A second, non-related accident occurred involving the Miller Lite Top Fuel parts truck, primarily used for transportation and storage of racing parts, machinery and equipment. On the afternoon of Wednesday, August 6, the parts truck was involved in a three-vehicle accident just outside Lincoln, Nebraska. Top Fuel crew members Kevin Secco and Walt Herr were also en route from California to the team's Indiana race facility when they slowed due to approaching traffic caused by on-road construction. The parts truck was stuck from behind by an ambulance which had been rear-ended by a tractor-trailer that was unable to slow in time. While Secco was uninjured, Herr suffered a mild concussion and was taken to a nearby hospital for tests and was released later that evening. The ambulance driver, whose identity is unknown, was tragically killed in the accident. No other information is known about any other individuals involved.
"We are saddened to learn of the passing of the ambulance driver lost in this horrible accident and our thoughts are with his loved ones," said Team Owner and President Don Prudhomme. "Fortunately, no one else that we know of was seriously hurt. Now we'll just do our best to get our teams ready for Brainerd."
Both the technology tractor-trailer and parts truck suffered major damage and have been sent to separate locations for evaluation and repair, if possible. In the meantime, new vehicles have been secured to transport racing parts and additional inventory as the teams prepare for the upcoming Lucas Oil Nationals (Brainerd, MN - Aug. 15-17).
Don Prudhomme Racing's administrative headquarters is located in Vista, California, with racing operations based out of the team's Brownsburg, Indiana facility. Snake Racing's roster of drivers include Capps, Skoal Blue Racing Funny Car pilot Tommy Johnson Jr., and reigning NHRA POWERade Top Fuel Champion Larry Dixon and the Miller Lite Team. Snake Racing is proud to represent such racing partners as United States Smokeless Tobacco Company (Skoal), Miller Brewing Company, Lucas Oil Products, Raybestos, and Mac Tools.
