SONOMA, Calif. - Most drag racers will tell you that hot weather, high horsepower, and a 'greasy' racetrack usually don't go together well. During Friday's first qualifying session at this weekend's NHRA Division 7 Federal Mogul Drag Racing Series at Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., Federal Mogul Dragster driver Kevin Brown found out first hand. Brown left the line on a strong launch, but lost traction at around the 300' mark.
"We were a little bit more aggressive on the tune-up than what we should have been for those track conditions," said Brown, from Clearfield, Utah. "We had it a bit healthy on the fuel and the clutch. Not super bad, but obviously, we missed just a hair. The track temp was about 140 degrees, and it just didn't want to take the horsepower I was trying to give it. It blew the tires off, and now we'll see what happens tomorrow."
Brown will have one more qualifying session today to attempt to better himself in the 16 car field. Brown currently sits tenth with his aborted 8.32 second elapsed time at only 108 mph in his Injected-nitro dragster.
Fellow Division 7 racer Brandon Henkelman leads the field with a 5.680 at 249.59 mph.
"I think we can get it down to a mid to low .60. The forecast is for about 78 degrees tomorrow with some clouds, so we might see some .50's. I think we have the tune-up in the car, and we can do it. We just need Venus and Mars to line up and give us a break, and we'll be ok."
The Federal Mogul Dragsters will have one more qualifying session at noon today. First round will follow at 4 p.m.
