Runner-up In Bowling Green--
Milford, Michigan. Danny Townsend, driver of the VIPsports.com Dodge Stratus Top Alcohol Funny Car, has been tugging hard to break the string of bad luck that's stymied his ParkerTech Racing Services crew. This past weekend, at Beech Bend Raceway Park's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series race, the string seemed frayed and ready to part.
The veteran driver broke the first strand by setting elapsed time and top speed track records to qualify number one. His 5.707 time, and 252.14 speed easily took the big spot away from defending TAFC champion, Mick Snyder. The second strand let go when the ladder gave him a "bye" run in the first round and the third was parted by a win in the semi-final round. The last strand seemed ready to give.
Frank Parker, team owner, was optimistic, but realistic enough not to celebrate early: "Danny's at his best and so is our VIP hot rod. We've been in this spot too often, this season-- poised to win, then falling short in the luck department."
Going into the final round, Townsend's VIPsports.com Dodge Stratus had Australian Steve Harker's Dodge Avenger covered by over a tenth of a second. From the start, neither driver could hold a straight line, although they maintained an even race. Harker's car settled down, at half-track, but bad luck again overpowered skill and Townsend's ride took him almost into the retaining wall. Harker got his first win of the season and the VIP crew had to settle for runner-up.
Townsend was disappointed, but not discouraged. "Frank and his crew are top drawer," he said. "Every mechanical issue we've faced, they've corrected. If luck were only a machine, they'd have wrenched it onto our side. That string is going to break and this team is going to win."
The VIPsports.com team is going directly to Indianapolis, from Bowling Green. With just one little strand of string left to break, the U.S. Nationals, August 30 -- September 4, very well could be their first National win of the season.
