LINCOLNTON, N.C. (Jan. 6, 2005) -- Snap-on Tools dragster crew chief Wayne Dupuy is set to be released today -- more than a month after he was admitted at the Carolina Medical Center for multiple injuries suffered in a car accident.

Dupuy -- tuner for Doug Herbert's Top Fuel dragster -- was severely injured in an accident near his home early the morning of Nov. 27. Dupuy lost control of his Ford Mustang on Highway 150 and was ejected from the vehicle, breaking his spine, pelvis, and left eye socket. He also suffered multiple abrasions.

He spent time in the Carolina Medical Center trauma ward of the Intensive Care Unit before he was he was upgraded to serious but stable that afternoon.

"Wayne's recovery is nothing short of miraculous," Herbert said. "He keeps saying that as soon as he is released from the hospital, he's coming to the shop. He just can't stay away from drag racing. He loves it so much and I think it has been driving him to succeed in his rehabilitation.

"Wayne isn't in any condition to be working all day, but I think it is going to be a great motivator for all of the guys to see him walk through the shop door for the first time. We've missed him and we've been worried about him and how he would get through his recovery. So it's great just to know he's finally out of the hospital."

Dupuy tunes the Snap-on Tools Top Fuel dragster of Lincolnton-based drag racer and four-time IHRA champion Herbert. He recently tuned Herbert to a 4.441-second quarter-mile elapsed time, making Herbert the third quickest man in the history of the sport. Dupuy, 41, moved to the Charlotte area six months ago from Jacksboro, Texas along with his wife Tressa and their three children Jessica, Hillary, and Zach.

"I just can't say enough about how great it is to have Wayne out of the hospital," Herbert said. "I'm tickled. His leadership is going to add a lot to this group. I think he is going to have to learn how to delegate duties more to others because Wayne is used to doing a lot of the work by himself. We're going to do whatever it takes to make sure he comes back to work slowly. We want what's best for Wayne."
