Kevin King wins Micra Cup race at Mont-Tremblant

Stefan Rzadinski’ s time of 2:03.470 was good enough for pole position. Two former singler seater drivers, Xavier Coupal and the reigning Micra Cup champion, Olivier Bédard, followed in order.

Kevin King, Metod Topolnik and veteran Jacques Bélanger completed the top 6.

Rzadinski took the lead of the race when the green was waved ahead of Bédard and Coupal. A few spots behind them, Kevin King was a man on a mission.

Bédard and Rzadinski traded the lead a few times before Rzadinski took it for good. King was already up into second place.

A few laps later, a full course yellow bunched up the field. The reason? Jacques Bélanger went out of the track and damaged the right hand side of his Micra.

Rzadinski continued to lead after the restart, and the battle raged behind him. One lap later, Bédard was spotted in sixth place. King was still in first place with just one lap to cover.

King crossed the line in first place, 0.265 of a second in front of Coupal and 0.487 of a second ahead of Rzadinski.

Valérie Limoges, Marc-Antoine Demers, Normand Boyer, Olivier Bédard, Chris Sahakian, Yves Aubé and Pierre Clavet completed the top 10.

A lot of bumping apparently took place during the closing laps of the race. When we left the circuit, drivers and race officials were still in heated discussions. The results are therefore unofficial.

For King, it was a second victory this season, having won at Calabogie two weeks ago. Race 2 will be held tomorrow afternoon. “My objective was to finish on the podium”, King told Motorsport.com. “My car was really good. I took the start in fourth place, but fell to fifth moments later. I then passed my rival one after the other and I passed Stefan [Rzadinski] going round the outside at the end of the long straight.”
