The winner of the first race held Saturday, Xavier Coupal, set the fastest time during the qualifying session with a time of 2:02.758.

“Without the help of the draft of other cars, which is very good,” Coupal told Motorsport.com. Kevin King, in the No. 40 Micra, was second fastest. The inaugural Cup champion, Olivier Bédard, established the third fastest time in his No. 99 car.

Jean-Michel Isabelle (No. 86), the winner of the first two rounds of the Cup at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in May, emerged fourth quickest ahead of Method Topolnik (No. 78), Australian Keishi Ayukai (No. 59), Stefan Rzadzinski (No. 55) and Normand Boyer (No. 11). Rzadzinski was today behind the wheel of the No. 55 car normally devoted to Nicolas Touchette as his No. 69 Micra had been damaged beyond repairs here at the track in Sunday’s crash.

The drivers competed under a hot sun and put on a great show for the spectators who were onsite for the event. Among them were nearly 80 Canadian Nissan Micra owners who enjoyed the races and took part in a parade lap of the Circuit Mont-Tremblant during the lunchtime break.

Kevin is the King

Coupal took control of the 30-minute race right from the start with Kevin King, Olivier Bédard and Jean-Michel Isabelle in hot pursuit.

A full course yellow was displayed on Lap 3 after comedian and stand-up comic Michel Barrette had an argument over a piece of tarmac with Frédéric Bernier. Both cars were damaged in the accident and needed to be towed away.

The race was restarted on Lap 6. King managed to pass the leading Coupal to move into first place. On Lap 7, King crossed the line in first place, leading from Bédard, Isabelle and Coupal. Two laps later, Coupal moved up into third place.

The final three laps of the race saw King, Bédard and Coupal ran bumber-to-bumber without an inch to spare.

At the conclusion of Lap 13, King received the chequered and won his first Micra Cup race of the season. Bédard finished second, just in front of his teammate Coupal.

Jean-Michel Isabelle was fourth a few cars lengths behind the leading trio. Method Topolnik was fifth ahead of Keishi Ayukai, Stefan Rzadzinski, Normand Boyer and Valérie Limoges who started from the pit lane after having been penalized for an avoidable accident during Saturday’s race. Marc-Antoine Cardin rounded out the Top 10.

Kevin King of the Sorel-Tracy Nissan team is first in the drivers’ standings with 208 points. Xavier Coupal (Albi Total) is second with 193 and Olivier Bédard (Albi Total) is third with 186.
