Las Vegas, Nevada-The Los Angeles Sheriff's Deputies Off-Road Race Team drove their 2001 Ford Ranger 4X4 XLT truck to a hard fought, second place finish at the 2001 Vegas to Reno race. This race was the third out of the four race 2001 Best In The desert Racing Association's "Silver State Series".

The starting line for the race was in the town of Pahrump, Nevada which is about an hour north of Las Vegas. The race course was 526 miles in length that took the racers to places like Beatty, Goldfield, Hawthorne, Fallon and finally Reno, Nevada. The Vegas to Reno race is the longest off-road race in the United States.

The Deputies started fourth out of the five trucks in their class. The starting interval was 1 minute, and at the 70 mile mark, the Deputies were already several minutes ahead of the competition. After some minor problems, the Deputies found themselves in second place, about three minutes behind the leader. The deputies continued their quest for victory, but ended up being a little short at the end. The Deputies average speed for the entire race was 35.72 mph, only .89 mph off-the leaders pace.
