Team Hummer To Wind Up Season At BITD Vegas 200

Nov. 28, 2001 - Reno, Nevada: Fresh off their first and third place finishes at the SCORE Baja 1000, Team HUMMER's Rod and Chad Hall lead the team south today for the 2nd Annual Best in the Desert Las Vegas 200. Scheduled for Saturday, December 1st, the three-lap event will be run over a 72-mile course in Jean, Nevada, about 30 miles south of this famous gambling community.

Race-time temperatures are forecast to be in the high 40's with a chance of showers, which seems to be fairly typical Southern Nevada weather about this time of year. "We don't mind the cold weather," said team owner, Rod Hall. "It's snowing in Reno so anything will be an improvement over the weather we've been used to lately. The HUMMER's thrive on miserable conditions and rugged terrain and I figured that's what we would get when we sent in our entry fee."

The Hall/Davidson #4112 HUMMER SUV came through last month's Baja 1000 in good shape. According to Team Race Director, Roy Davidson, "We went over the truck after Baja and nothing appeared to be damaged, so we just prepped the car, put in a new windshield and we're going to run this race likes it's a 200 mile extension of the Baja 1000."

Somewhat more was done to the Hall/Stoskoph #8101 Full Stock Pick-up, but it was actually in pretty fair shape as well. "We had to lift the body to weld a body mount and replace a cross-member," said Chad. "We also installed some new, stiffer springs, which lifted the ride height about two inches. I was able to get quite a bit more speed out of the HUMMER on the test track then I could before Mexico. The truck needed those new springs."

Until the team's success at the Baja 1000, this had been a season of rebuilding and some frustration but the trucks are both working very well now and the crews are up-beat about the season finale this week-end. Both Rod and Chad are going to close out the season driving solo for the entire 216-mile distance. There will be one main pit and one outlying pit so chasing the race vehicles won't be an option. All that will matter will be speed and reliability!

"There's nothing secret about our agenda at this race," said Chad. "We think Team HUMMER has the best two trucks in the Full-Stock division and we're going out there to win this one from the moment they drop the flag".

As John Wooden, the great UCLA Basketball coach once observed, "It's not who starts the game but who finishes it that really matters".
