Team and driver interest is booming in the International Single-Seater Challenge, the new and cost-effective high-level one-make series scheduled to make its debut on the fabled Italian Grand Prix circuit at Monza on March 31.

Eleven European-based outfits have indicated to ISSC that they want to take part in the inaugural competition for identical Reynard Motorsport-built cars powered by 3.5-litre Chrysler V6 stockblock engines, set to take place over 12 races in 10 countries. Several intend to run two cars, while others are single-car operations.

Teams gearing up to compete are: Alpie Motorsport (set up in Britain by Brazilian engineer Teo Lopez), Benelux Formula Ford team Gielissen Racing, Racemasters Finland (run by ex-Formula 3 racer Reima Soderman), British-based Orbit Motorsport (Roy Kennedy), Marque Cars Racing (Don Hardman) and Bill Durrant Racing. German squads Eifelland Racing, SL Formula Racing, Target Racing and Zebra Racing, and Austrian Walter Thimmler’s WT Motorsport are also planning to be among the ISSC’s pioneers.

The custom-designed carbonfibre Reynard Cars cost £49,000 as fully-assembled rolling chassis, while the 300bhp Chrysler V6 24-valve engines are leased to teams at £25,000 for the season (with fixed-price overhauls as required). With budgets estimated at £200,000-£250,000, the exciting series slots between Scholarship Class Formula 3 and Formula 3000.

Twenty chassis and more than 60 specially-developed, race-prepared and equalised engines are currently in stock at ISSC’s Bicester headquarters. Spares are also on-stream. "We’re ready to roll, so it’s a case of first-come, first-served," says ISSC’s Jon Slenzak. As many as 26 cars may be accommodated in the 2001 series.

The FIA approved calendar visits the current Grand Prix circuits of Monza, Magny-Cours, Silverstone, Hungaroring, A1-Ring, and the Nurburgring, the new ovals at Lausitzring and Rockingham, plus Brno, Jarama and Estoril. The schedule not only gives ISSC drivers Formula 1-relevant training, but also presents it against a unique cosmopolitan backdrop, with many events supporting the FIA GT Championships.
