‘Uncle’ Jacques Villeneuve, the brother of Gilles and uncle of 1997 Formula 1 World Champion Jacques, is to race on the support bill at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal next weekend.

The 61-year-old from St Cuthbert, Quebec, will race in the Formula 1600 double-header, with races scheduled for Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.

He last raced at Montreal, the circuit that bears the name of his legendary brother, in 1991 – recording the fastest lap in the Formula Atlantic event.

Villeneuve twice failed to qualify for his home grand prix: in an Arrows in the fall of 1981, and came within a few hundredths of making the grid in 1983 at the wheel of a March RAM.

“We are glad that Jacques will be on track in Montreal, even if he did announce his official retirement from racing earlier this year,” said Francois Dumontier, president and CEO of Octane Racing Group, promoter of the event.

“He deserves it and racing fans also deserve to see him once more in action.

“Motorsport is a mechanical endeavour, but it is also about emotion with talented and passionate human beings driving the cars. Jacques Villeneuve is certainly among them.

“He is a true giant and we are all fortunate to have the opportunity to see him on track and cheer for him once again.”

Villeneuve was hugely successful in snowmobile racing as well as a lengthy professional motorsport career, which included Can-Am, CART and sportscars.

A series of snowmobile crashes left him with severe injuries on multiple occasions.
