McQuarrie Leads Field in Russell/USAC Triple Crown Practice at Sears Point

Sonoma, CA -Tyler McQuarrie of Walnut Creek, CA was the fastest driver in both of Thursday's practice sessions before the start of the first race of the 1999 Russell/USAC Triple Crown Pro Series presented by Yokohama. McQuarrie, who is currently 8th in the points in the Formula Vauxhall series in England, jumped a flight after an 8th place finish at Donington Park on Sunday to claim his prize of a free ride in the Triple Crown. McQuarrie's ride is his prize for winning Russell's amateur series in 1998, the USAC Formula Russell Championship.

McQuarrie has stiff competition for the pole for Saturday's race that supports the Save Mart/Kragen 350 NASCAR Winston Cup race at Sears Point Raceway. Russell Graduate Runoffs winner, Nathan Smith of Escalon, CA was just a little more than a half a second slower in his Formula Russell racecar. He leads a field of at least eight other drivers that are all within a second of each other's times.

Qualifying for the Triple Crown is today and is scheduled to begin after NASCAR "Bud Pole Qualifying."
