Point races tight heading into final stages of 2002 season.

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. (August 28, 2002) -As the Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship heads into the final four races of the 2002 season, the championship point races continue to tighten.

Following the doubleheader at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, in conjunction with the CART FedEX Championship, Cape Motorsports' Bryan Sellers continues to lead by a comfortable margin. However, Roquin Motorsports' rookie Jeffrey Jones has begun to cut into Sellers lead. Once as large as 40 points, Jones benefited from Sellers' first DNF of the season, to narrow the lead to 28 points. Behind the lead duo, PR1 Motorsports' rookie Sean McIntosh and OTM Motorsports' veteran JW Urlin have joined the title fight. McIntosh has closed to within 10 points of Jones, in the battle for both the Zetec Championship and the Greg Moore Rookie of the Year award, while Urlin is a mere six points further adrift. With 32 points available per race and the title contenders showing strong at every race, the 2002 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship will likely come down to the season-finale doubleheader at Virginia International Raceway.

In the American Continental Championship, MeeksMiller Racing's Kip Meeks is in the driver's seat. Meeks holds a sizeable lead over 10/Tenths Motorsports' Doug Smith and Project S3's Jeff Sakowicz. While Smith and Sakowicz both have a mathematical chance at the championship, Meeks needs only to finish ahead of them at the next two rounds to win the 2002 ACC title.

The fight for the Race Team of the Year honors has been, and continues to be a hard fought affair. Florida-based Cape Motorsports leads a three-way fight for the title. With Zetec Championship leader Sellers and the recent addition of Ross Fonferko, Cape has won a series high six wins, including the latest round by Fonferko in only his fourth race. Second in both series wins and in the standings is California-based PR1 Motorsports. PR1 runs two-time race winner Lawson Aschenbach and Travis Irving, as well as title contender McIntosh. Right behind PR1 in the standings is fellow race winner Pabst Racing Services. The Wisconsin-based team runs multiple Zetec Championship race winner Tonis Kasemets and Venezuelan Ricardo Imery. Using the manufacturer's point system, the Race Team of Year award could be decided at the next event, but given the Zetec Championship has had six different race winners on five different teams, anything can happen.

The 2002 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship season continues with Rounds Eleven and Twelve at Road Atlanta, October 10-11. As part of the Petit Le Mans weekend, the Zetec Championship will race in support of the American Le Mans Series on the challenging 2.5-mile road course.
