Open Wheel Action Thunders through the Mission Valley

Bayview Inn of Polson and Blooms' Factory Furniture Outlet of Missoula sponsored the Mission Valley Auto Racers featured weekend events, the Northwest Modified Racing Series, at Pablo's' Mission Valley Speedway. Race teams from Washington Idaho and Montana were in the valley this past weekend vying for position on the exciting asphalt at Mission Valleys' high banked tri-oval.

We had some concerns about the weekends weather but Saturday proved to be just what the doctor ordered to remedy hearts and minds of the Northwest Modifieds who had been rained out for the previous eight weeks, Sunday was also a blessing, with the exception of a forty minute rain delay, most of the rain missed the almost always dry speedway. The Modified fifty lap main did finish under a yellow caution for rain with three laps remaining.

The 2003 Northwest Modified defending champion # 54 Greg Ochs took top honors in the featured 50 lap main event on Sunday. Greg had his work cut out for him starting in the middle of the pack having to work through traffic while avoiding several incidents which brought out caution flags. # 7 Lonnie Stocker started on the pole position and held the lead for nearly 12 laps, then trading back and forth for the lead with the # 17 car of Steve Shaffer. # 95 Jeff Braton, also working from back in the pack, was able to move into contention for the top spot. With about 19 laps remaining # 54 Greg Ochs moved into the lead followed closely by the #95 car of Jeff Braton. Braton battled hard with Ochs for the lead spot, taking a look high and then low but Ochs had the lead covered like a blanket and wouldn't let go.

MGD Lite Hobby Stock action was a crowd pleaser with # 31 Smokin Casey Brandt chasing down #00 Wild Willy Ovitt on the last lap of the main event to take the Bloom's Factory Furniture Outlet trophy.

Budweiser Compacts are one of my favorites to watch, with a lot of great action and lead swapping. # 12 Tim Corbett of Ronan was running slick tires instead of the treaded type tire that he usually runs at MVS and needed some time to get the car dialed in but once he did look out, it was straight to the front and no lookin back for the Lucky Strike Lanes sponsored #12.

Justice Brothers Wholesale Distributors of Missoula sponsored the M.V.A.R. local classes for Saturday night and offered an extra $25 dollars to the main event winners if they were sporting a Justice Brothers sticker on the winning car. Many were and got the money.

Pepsi Pizza Hut Super Stocks ran Saturday night, with Mission Valley Auto Racers President # 18 Shawn Dumont holding down the throttle to take top honors in the main event. # 55 Nathan Hampson started on the pole with #18 on the outside, #18 moved into an early lead and wasn't challenged until the # 25 Kirk Hennefer moved through the field of cars to put up a late race challenge and battle for position with a lap and a half remaining. Dumont ran low through turn four and moved up the track as he raced Hennefer to the flag stand, Dumont taking the victory.

Bomber 4s were exciting as always, # 69 16 year old Amanda Watt had her hands full as she battled the # 4 Howard Lilly and # 68 Don Eutsler for position through turn four until she was no longer able to hold on and made contact with the turn four wall. # 4 went on to take the win.

Noon's Formula Indy's put together an awesome race with some spills and thrills, no one injured but several cars did make contact with each other. Rookie # 22 Brandon Grovesner of Missoula took home his first heat race win. The main event winner and 2003 Noon's Formula Indy defending Champion # 1 Don Staggs started at the rear of the pack and moved successfully through traffic, avoiding several incidents that could have ended his bid for the win, to take home another main event trophy.

Don't forget this weekend Saturday 6-19-04 S & S Sports of Ronan Sponsors our Burnout contest, Budweiser Compacts, Stuart's Napa Autocare Bombers, Bomber 4s, and Kruisers , time trials at 6pm racing at 7pm. See you at the races! To learn more about the Mission Valley Auto Racers visit our website at www.missionvalleyspeedway.com sponsored by ABT Controls of Missoula.
