LEXINGTON, Ohio (Aug. 14) - For the second straight week, wet weather put a damper on Barber Dodge Pro Series final qualifying. Peter Boss, who hails from the beachfront town of Narragansett, R.I., benefitted the most from the gloomy conditions at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington Saturday afternoon, eaning the pole without getting into his car.

Boss recorded the fastest lap (1:24.541/96.152 mph) in Friday's half-hour dry session, then did not change into his driving suit for final qualifying. An overnight downpour and a drizzle shortly before the session began insured that the second-year driver's time would stand, though he did have his blue and silver IT Infosystems machine brought down to pit lane in the unlikely event that the sun poked through the thick cloud cover.

"My mechanic Ross and I were really working on that raindance and it really paid off," Boss said. "I had a good setup and working with Rocky Moran Sr. has definitely helped. I just kept on plugging away and attacking the track with those new Michelins on there. I just kept on getting time after time after time. Then someone put in a 1:24 and that was the goal. I plugged one in and kept the pole from there."

Todd Snyder of Sheffield, Mass. (1:24.578/96.110 mph) will attempt follow up his win last week in Detroit from the second starting position. Nilton Rossoni of Curitiba, Brazil, second in the championship points, put up the third-best time (1:24.614/96.069 mph) while current points leader and reigning series champion Jeff Simmons of East Granby, Conn. was fourth (1:24.821/95.835 mph). A minute 12-point margin separates the two drivers on the verge of Round 8 of the 12-race championship.

"Unfortunately the rain came but that's racing. I think that I had a good qualifying yesterday and we were planning on doing that. We said that we could not wait for Saturday because the forecast was rain," Rossoni said. "So we got a good lap yesterday. I think it could have been faster today, but I'm starting third, a good position, and Jeff (Simmons) is behind me. I will have a good racecar, as always, because we will work hard on the setup for the race. Tomorrow I will race a calm race and hope for another podium."

Townsend Bell of Costa Mesa, Calif. (1:24.882/95.766 mph) will start fifth, followed by Michael Valiante of Vancouver, B.C. (1:24.995/95.639 mph). Jamie Menninga of Pella, Iowa (1:25.134/95.482 mph) posted the seventh-best qualifying effort. Iradj Alexander of Switzerland (1:25.272/95.328 mph), the Netherlands' Sepp Koster (1:25.456/95.123 mph) and Roger Yasukawa of Santa Monica, Calif. (1:25.498/95.076 mph) comprised the remainder of the top 10, which was separated by a second.

In Saturday's wet session, Matt Plumb of Unionville, Penn. notched the best time with a 1:49.097 of the 14 drivers that took to the track in rain tires. Boss, Plumb and Koster are the only three drivers to have scored points in each of the seven races. Boss is looking toward another first in Sunday's 40-minute timed race, scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. EST. His older brother Andy Boss, who currently races in the PPG-Dayton Indy Lights series won the Barber Dodge race at Mid-Ohio in 1997 and finished third to CART Champ Car star Juan Montoya in 1994.

"I've been here in the wet and the dry, so I think I came in with a good amount of knowledge of where to place the car on the track," Boss said. "Around here that's real important; getting good shots (through the corners) and getting out on the straights at a good speed. I'm ready to come out here and try to win tomorrow."

#LEXINGTON, Ohio - Combined Barber Dodge Pro Series qualifying results from the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course Saturday on the 2.258-mile, 14-turn road circuit for Sunday's 40-minute race at the CART Miller Lite 200. Drivers are classified by position, car number, name/hometown and time/speed.
