NZ: International Motorsport Teretonga Raceway preview

FIGHT FOR THE LEAD HEATS UP

The battle to lead the New Zealand Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge will heat up as the cars take to the circuit at Teretonga Raceway in Invercargill this weekend for the third round of the series.

Current leader Daniel Gaunt heads the charge over International Motorsport driver Jonny Reid by just 52 points with 429 in the bank, while Reid's team mate Mitchell Cunningham holds onto third place, just 76 points back. Reid and Cunningham have had held their own over the six races contested so far.

Cunningham had a stroke of luck at the opening round at Pukekohe finishing on the podium after a crash in qualifying could have put a hold on his campaign. He continued with consistency at Ruapuna in December to keep his championship on track and held onto third in the series. Cunningham is looking forward to getting back on the track this weekend after the summer break, "I can't wait to get out there again, I've had a good break and I'm ready to keep pushing" said Cunningham. My strategy is to keep pushing on and keep finishing races. Teretonga is not a very technical track and it's quite short which keeps everyone close, but I've won here before so I'm feeling confident of a good consistent result."

Reid is continuing to keep his eye on moving into the lead ahead of Gaunt. "I'm here to win, nothing else" said Reid, "I'm looking forward to the mini endurance race this weekend. We have one of the best pitstop crews in pitlane, it's the style of racing that I'm used to, it's what I know. The sprint races will be good too, I'll take each race as it comes but my focus is on winning. I've had to adjust to the GT3 format of racing, it's all over in 12 - 16 laps so you need to know when to push. I'm here to prove a point, so watch this space."

996 campaigner Simon Evans completes the team's line up of the Porsche GT3's for this weekend. The youngster is certainly showing his race-craft improvement as he continues to impress the critics with race wins and a consistent pace at each of the rounds.

International Motorsport have used the summer break to further develop the Mondiale / Audi Dealer Network S3, with initial testing showing considerable improvement on what has been a frustrating season so far for the new addition to the team.

Brothers Dan and Richard Bagnall continue with their battle in the Mini Challenge series and are looking forward to getting back on the Invercargill circuit again, following the cancellation of racing last time they were at Teretonga due to unexpected snow.

Racing gets underway for all classes on Saturday with three races over the weekend.
