SEBRING, FL - Andy Evans, president of International Motor Sports Group, announced today that SportsCar will continue in 1998. Evans says he will introduce a franchise system of ownership in SportsCar. Owners will be asked to form a franchise board of directors like that of CART in Indy car racing. It is hoped that leadership will surface among team owners, and a board in place by the end of the year.

"We're like Continental" Evans said, when he compared the business of sports car racing to the airline industry. SportsCar will be looking for concessions from participants in order to continue.

While Evans wants to face his competition head to head in business, he suggested that litigation may be necessary to keep ISC from abusing what Evans called "a dominant market position". Evans contends that pulling the 24 race at Daytona from SportsCar's schedule was a clear abuse of a dominant position.

Next year's Twelve Hours of Sebring will be run as an invitational race and will not be a part of the SportsCar championship. Evans hopes the 12 hour race will be run much like the 24 race at Le Mans, which is not part of a championship series.

Evans restated his mission to keep international sports car racing in North America. Sebring and Laguna Seca are not on next year's FIA schedule. Evans said that the FIA are not interested in getting into a political battle in North America so the races were not put back on the schedule. In a meeting with FIA officials, Evans was told that all the political problems would need to be solved before the FIA would consider putting Sebring and Laguna Seca back on the FIA schedule.
