Laguna Seca Sports Car Weekend to Include Professional Sports Car Racing Series Finale

TAMPA, FL (August 14, 1998) - Professional Sports Car Racing (SPORTSCAR) and the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP) announced today that SPORTS CAR's World Sports Car Championship and GT Series Presented by Virgin Interactive, as well as, the Sports Toyota Championship will be featured races during the Visa Sports Car Championships Presented by Honda at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, CA.

The second annual event will be October 23-25 and will feature the season finale for the world's best sports car drivers and teams showcased in several races. The FIA GT Championship will once again race on Northern California's legendary circuit, with the factory backed Mercedes Benz, Panoz, Porsche and Dodge teams competing for the final time in 1998.

"We are very pleased that SCRAMP asked SPORTS CAR to be part of their Sports Car racing weekend," said a SPORTS CAR official. "The opportunity to run the SPORTS CAR season finale along with the FIA GT Championship finale will make a very exciting weekend of racing."

"The Professional Sports Car Racing package was the best overall package offered to us and, again, it was the one we originally wanted," said John Stornetta, General Manager of Laguna Seca Raceway. "We promised our fans that we would bring the best sports car racing show possible to Laguna Seca Raceway in October for the Visa Sports Car Championships presented by Honda and this is what we believe we have done."

The remaining events on SPORTS CAR's 1998 schedule include the NAPA Auto Parts Sebring Classic on September 17-19, at Sebring International Raceway, site of the season opener Superflo 12 Hours. In addition, the inaugural Petit Le Mans will occur at Road Atlanta October 9-11th. The feature event, the Petit Le Mans, will be a 1,000 mile or 1O Hour race that in addition to the World Sports Cars and GT Series Presented by Virgin Interactive, will allow race cars from the FIA's GT Championship and the ACO's 24 Hours of Le Mans to compete. In addition, the Petit Le Mans weekend will feature the SPEEDVISION Cup for Stock Sports Cars season finale.
