1999 SUPERFLO 12 HOURS AT SEBRING provisional qualifying, March 17
The Prototype Technology Group BMW M3s qualified second and third in the GT class during the first of two qualifying sessions for the Superflo 12 Hours at Sebring. Final qualifying is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
"This is a 12-hour race so it doesn't really matter where you qualify. Of course, you always want to qualify on the pole and make a statement, 'We are the fastest,' but to the outcome of the race it doesn't really mean anything," said team owner Tom Milner.
"We'll have to see what we're going to do tomorrow. We might go and qualify again and see if we can get the pole. But it's just not that important. We'll make sure we have the cars right. That is more important than going out to qualify again."
Boris Said qualified the #10 M3 second in the GT class with a time of two minutes, 10.753 seconds on the 3.7-mile Sebring International Speedway. His qualifying speed averaged 101.87 miles an hour. Hans Stuck and Peter Cunningham will co-drive with Said in Saturday's endurance race.
"We're struggling a little bit with the balance of our car. We tried a lot of things today and we made some improvements. I think now we know which direction to go in," Said explained. "My ego says I should have been on the pole, but I think tomorrow will be better."
Mark Simo drove the #7 M3 to third in class in 2:10.881 (101.77). He will share driving duties with Brian Cunningham and Johannes Van Overbeek.
"The car was working really good. It was my first time qualifying the car ever, so I wanted to follow Boris. He's usually better than I am at finding holes in the traffic," Simo said. Although he would like to qualify again, he noted, "It's probably better for us to just focus on the race setup now and think 12 hours, not one good lap."
