Sad news of the death of former Australian Champion co-driver John Dawson Damer who crashed his Lotus racing car at the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed hillclimb in the UK on Saturday.
Dawson Damer partnered Colin Bond in rallies from 1977 when the former Holden driver switched to Ford going on to take the Australian Rally Championship in 1978. The championship came for Dawson Damer despite the fact that team mate Greg Carr won the drivers title because he competed in one more event than Fred Gocentas that year.
The affable Dawson Damer was one of the true characters of motorsport and a real enthusiast. He was the owner of the World's largest collection of Lotus racing cars aqnd continued to co-drive alongside Colin Bond including piloting the zero car at Telstra Rally Australia each year.
The second son of the Earl of Portarlington , the Honourable John Dawson Damer , to give him his full title, decided to settle in Australia in the 1960s and had a range of business interests here.
For anyone who knew DD it is a sad passing as he brought a degree of theatre, fun and enjoyment wherever he appeared.
