Australian Rally Championship front-runner Eli Evans was unstoppable at the International Rally of Queensland.

Evans and co-driver Glen Weston wasted no time getting on with it, opening up a 3.1s lead over brother Simon Evans on the first stage of the first leg.

But in the end, it was attrition that helped the younger Evans seal the first leg, with Simon’s day ending with a drive-shaft failure, Tony Sullens’ Citroen falling victim to a water crossing, and Molly Taylor slowed by a water leak.

As a result, Adrian Coppin wound up second in Leg 1, Taylor dropping to third.

Evans was unbeatable again in the second leg, although brother Simon and his repaired Honda Jazz did spend much of the day trading fastest times with the leader. In the end, though, Evans was able to win the round, and sweep the event.

“The DS3 ran faultlessly again and we had a great weekend,” said Eli Evans.

“I threw trees at it, had it up on two wheels, went through water splashes. I’m just happy I’m able to give Citroen the results they were after.”

The win means Evans now leads the ARC standings by eight points over Taylor.

“Molly’s doing a great job but I think I’ve got her measure now,” he added.

“The pressure is on her now to see if she can maintain the speed.”

In the Asia Pacific Rally Championship portion of the event, Gaurav Gill won the first leg before being sidelined on Day 2 with engine problems. That gave his MRF Skofa team-mate Pontus Tidemand a clear run to victory.
