Heikkinen joins Marklund Motorsport for FIA World Rallycross Championship

Swedish Rallycross outfit Marklund Motorsport is delighted to announce that 2013 GRC Champion Toomas ‘Topi’ Heikkinen will lead the team in their bid for title success this coming season.

Topi and the team will debut brand new Marklund Motorsport-built Volkswagen Polo RX Supercars in 2014 following a year of testing and developing the car last season. After a period of strong investment, Team Owner & Manager Jan Marklund believes the addition of Heikkinen allows the team to enter the newly formed FIA World Rallycross Championship as immediate title contenders in both driver and team championships.

He said: “Signing Topi shows the sort of progress that Marklund Motorsport is making going into the new season.

His results last year speak for themselves and we are incredibly happy to have a champion leading our driver lineup. It’s a very exciting period in our project and shows the hard work and planning that we have put in is really paying off.”

Topi echoed Jan’s confident outlook and believes Marklund Motorsport have all the tools to replicate his successes of 2013 and mount a convincing challenge on the FIA World Rallycross Championship title.

He explained: “After a successful year winning the 2013 Global Rallycross Championship my goal now is to win the new FIA World Rallycross Championship with Marklund Motorsport, and nothing less. I’m confident that together we can develop a winning car and team. I want to thank Jan Marklund for this great opportunity to join Marklund Motorsport, I'm pumped for the season ahead.”

Heikkinen will take his place in the team alongside Anton Marklund, who now heads into his second season in the Supercar Class.

Having battled against Topi in last year’s GRC and at each Global X Games, Anton is fully aware of the talent and fighting spirit his new teammate possesses.

He said: “Topi is a great driver and a real competitor – I’m looking forward to working with him and seeing what this season brings. We have been working extremely hard over the last 12 months and securing a driver as talented as Topi is testament to the incredible development the team has made. We want to win and be the best team in Rallycross.”

Marklund Motorsport will now continue their preparations for the 2014 season, which will see them compete in the newly formed FIA World Rallycross Championship and the summer X Games at COTA in Austin.
