ENSLIN CROWNED AS BIKE CHAMPION AND BOESMAN SCORED FIRST QUAD VICTORY

After a dramatic Lone Star Racing PEP Naboomspruit 400 off-road race, Clayton Enslin (EPH Shimwells Yamaha) was crowned the 2005 national champion when he scored his second victory this year while Jacques "Boesman" Struwig (Southern ATV Laeger 350) scored his first quad victory of the season.

The very hot and dusty Lone Star Racing PEP Naboomspruit 400, the seventh round of the ATV Powrsport ITP national off-road championship for bikes and the eighth round for quads, was quite an eventful race as a quad competitor died after a head-on crash with a vehicle while some of the bike riders ended up (unknowingly) cutting out a section of the route and had their times corrected. Louwrens Mahoney (KTM SA Racing), who won three events this year, was the first rider off the mark and the first rider home, but had to settle for second place after the time adjustment. Enslin, who started the race in second place, eventually won the race while the defending champion, Darryl Curtis (KTM SA Racing) finished third and won the Open Class.

In the national quad category, Struwig started the race in third place behind Brendan Badenhorst (ATV Powersport Lone Star Honda) and Brian Baragwanath (Yamaha YFZ450), but it was Stefan Coetzee (Quadworx VLS Husaberg) who took the lead just after the halfway mark when both Badenhorst and Baragwanath withdraw from the race because of the fatal accident of Badenhorst's team-mate, Gavin Franken. Both of them eventually decided to continue, but lost their first and second positions. Struwig took the lead 40km before the finish - at the same place where his quad broke last year while he was lying in second place - when the swing- arm of Coetzee's VLS broke. It was the first time in more than four years that a 350cc Banshee won a national off-road race. The 17-year old Baragwanath finished second for the second time this year. Cornel de Villiers (Bombardier Speed Quad) was third and was followed by his team-mate, Hendrik Potgieter. Badenhorst finished fifth overall and the battle for the overall championship between him and De Villiers will be settled at the Roof of Africa in Lesotho.

Carl Wichmann (Bombardier Speed Quad) finished sixth and was followed by Hennie Michau (ATV Powersport Lone Star Honda) who won the Senior Class ahead of Christo van der Merwe (Bombardier Speed Quad) who was 11th overall, but who is still leading this class championship. The rest of the Top Ten consisted of Simon Thesen (ATV Powersport Lone Star YFZ450) who was eighth; Vincent Loubser (Loerie Yamaha George YFZ450) and Kiri Oberholzer (Polaris SA Racing Predator) who suffered from a misfire early in the race.

In the national motorcycle category, Gray Dick (Shimwells Yamaha/Panasonic Car Audio) was fourth overall and second in the Open Class followed by the consistent Geoffrey Wolhuter (Russell Campbell Sadiba Kawasaki) and Spencer Kriel (Alfie Cox Adventures KTM).

The 125cc Class was won by Juan van Rooyen (Russell Campbell Sadiba Kawasaki) who finished in an excellent seventh place overall. Kenneth Gilbert (EPH Shimwells Yamaha) was second in the 125cc Class, but has already been crowned as the 2005 class champion. Hylton Smith (Ramco Suzuki) was eighth overall while Riaan van Niekerk (KTM SA Racing) finished ninth and scored another 200cc Class victory. Gavin Louw (Shimwells Yamaha) was tenth and second in the 200cc Class.

The Senior Pro Class was won by Grant May (Russell Campbell Sadiba Kawasaki) while Brian Bontekoning (KTM SA Racing), who won this class at the previous six occassions, finished second. The Master Class (national non-championship) was won by Ian van der Walt (Russell Campbell Kawasaki).

In the quad championship, Pieter Theron (Suzuki LTZ450) won the Sportsmans Class while the Master Class (national non-championship) was won by Simon Thesen's dad, Milton (ATV Powersport Yamaha); Roxy dos Santos (La Bamba Hoedspruit Honda) won the 30 Plus Class (national non-championship) and the Ladies Class (national non-championship) was won by Lynette Pieterse (Yamaha YFZ450).
