The Carnival City Casino 400, the final round of the SA Off Road Car Racing Championship presented by Absa got of to a flying start in Brakpan this afternoon when the Prologue to determine starting positions for tomorrow's main event, that will consist of three laps of a 138km course got underway.

Reigning SA Production Vehicle Champions Duncan Vos and Mike Griffith had the large crowd cheering for more when they literally did some low flying in the Proudly South African Nissan Hardbody to post the fastest time, but with almost disastrous consequences when they mistimed the final jump and landed heavily.

Newly crowned SA Production Vehicle Champions and teammates Hannes Grobler and Richard Leeke were one second slower over the 6km course and were credited with what rated as the highest and best jump of the day.

Special Vehicle championship contenders and winners of two events this season, Gary Bertholdt and Brandon Harcus, equalled the Nissan pair's time in the Adrenalise Corporate Entertainment BAT and were six seconds ahead of Mark Corbett and Juan Mohr in the Century Property Developments BAT that had a rather scary flight over one of the jumps.

Brothers Laurence and Gerhard du Plessis were fifth fastest in the Mobil Jimco and were followed six seconds later by Class A Championship leaders Gerald Mundell and Billy Bond in the Prolong BAT and Clint Gibson and Mike Brown in the Praesidium Financial Services BAT who are joint sixth fastest.

John Weir-Smith was eighth fastest in the O'Hagan's / Kopanong Hotel Superteam Jimco and was followed by four crews who shared the same time, namely Neil Woolridge and Kenny Skjoldhammer in the Team Ford Racing Ranger, Apie Reyneke and Robin Houghton in the Castrol Toyota Land Cruiser, veteran Nardus Alberts and Colin Hope who were the fastest of the Class S qualifiers in the Wrapsa Raceco and Jakkie Joubert and Christo du Plessis in the JoJo Tanks VW Beetle.

Terence Marsh and Trevor Ahier were 13th in the Nashua Mobile Racing Jimco with five crews sharing 14th place. John Moore 14th in the Shell Connix Chenowth, leading Class B qualifier Rob Gurney in the Auto World JRE, Rob Wark in the O'Hagan's / Kopanong Hotel Superteam Mighty Mag and Francois Smit in the Franic all completed the 6km route in 5 minutes and 9 seconds.

Arnold du Plessis and George Baker (BB Auto Nissan Hardbody) edged out Alfie Cox and Hennie ter Stege (Arnold Chatz Cars Nissan Hardbody) by one second to grab an early lead in Class D.

Crews will start the main event at 30-second intervals at 08h00 tomorrow and the scene is set for an exciting finale to a closely fought championship.
