Block/Gelsomino Lead Rally New York USA at Half-Way

The team of Ken Block/Alex Gelsomino (Subaru Impreza WRX STI) hold first place in Rally New York USA, with the first of two days of competition completed. The event is being held on paved roads near Wawarsing, Ellenville and Neversink, New York, which are slick as a result of rain throughout the day.

Block/Gelsomino's lead is partly the result of their own speed, and partly due to mechanical problems which eliminated three of their strongest competitors. Defending winner Celsus Donnelly and co-driver Barry Smith (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8) retired from second place at mid-day, while about 30 seconds behind, when their car's front differential failed. Seamus Burke (2006-7 national champion) and Ole Holter (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9) went out soon after, when their vehicle's transmission stuck in fifth gear. And Enda McCormack/Bernard Farrell (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 6) were sidelined by a damaged radiator and unspecified drive train problems.

Otis Dimiters/Dominik Jozwiak (Subaru Impreza WRX) are in second place, approximately 1-1/4 minutes behind the leaders. Martin Donnelly/Stephen Duffy (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8) are third.

In the race within the rally for two-wheel-drive cars, Bruce Davis/Jimmy Brandt (Dodge Neon SRT-4) lead by nearly a minute from Mark Lawrence/Robert Maciejski (Volkswagen Golf).
