Gubelmann Leads Olympus Rally

Shelton, WA (May 20, 2006) - At the end of the first leg of the Olympus International Rally, Wyeth Gubelmann and co-driver Cindy Krolikowski are in the lead. The pair are followed closely by Ralph Kosmides and co-driver Alan Ockwell. Local favorite Gary Cavett from Kirkland, WA and co-driver Jeff Secor from Michigan round out the top three.

Gubelmann took the lead early on, but Wolfgang Hoeck and Ralph Kosmides quickly rose to the challenge. They might have been joined by Blake Yoon, but he went off course on the first stage and was stuck until another competitor pulled his car back onto the road. Behind them were the Subarus of Dave Hintz and Gary Cavett.

After the third stage, Dave Hintz was out due to engine failure. It was his first engine failure while rallying in around twenty years.

Hoeck and Kosmides were slowly catching up with Gubelminn when Hoeck was assessed with a 10 minute penalty for checking into a service control too early. This pushed him back down in the results, but attrition limited the adverse effect. On the other hand, Kosmides was able to take advantage of Gubelmann backing off to knock the gap between the two of them to five seconds.

Cavett put in a consistent performance that allowed him to take advantage of others to move into third place. Yoon recovered to put in some very fast stage times, but the time penalties associated with his off course excursion on the first stage have been so far too great to overcome.

USRC Open 4WD class points leader George Georgakopoulas withdrew after posting a very slow times on the second and fourth stages. The reason for his withdrawal is unknown.

The two-wheel drive competition had been reduced to two cars and they are both Dodge Neons. The only remaining Open 2wd class car is a Neon SRT-4 driven by Bruce Davis with co-driver Jimmy Brandt. The last remaining Stock class car is that of Kristopher Marciniak and co-driver Christine Wittish. All other two-wheel drive cars retired with mechanical issues, Davis and Marciniak need only to finish in order to consolidate their position in their respective USRC championships.

Leg 2 of the Olympus Interational Rally starts tomorrow morning and consists of 65.36 stage miles over six stages. The leg starts in downtown Shelton, WA. Out of the twelve teams that started the rally, seven remain.
