Local Formula 2 Champion Simon Evans today confirmed that Volkswagen would officially withdraw it's involvement with rallying world wide and in doing so canceling plans for Evans to contest the 2001!

"It's obviously a bitter disappointment but it also opens a new avenue for myself and the team," commented Simon Evans earlier this afternoon. "We have always had plans in place to move into a turbo-charged four wheel drive, now that plan will come about sooner rather than later."

Despite strong support from Volkswagen Australia to contest the Australian Championship in 2001 the decision ultimately lay with Volkswagen's Head Office in Germany. "The decision really didn't come as a huge surprise to the us when it was passed down earlier this year, especially with VW's moves to wind down it's rally activities around the world," stated Evans.
