PRICE, STROLL BIG WINNERS AT ROAD AMERICA FERRARI HISTORIC CHALLENGE
(ELKHART LAKE, WI, July 10) Tom Price and Lawrence Stroll were the big winners in the Shell Ferrari/Maserati Historic Challenge at Road America this weekend. Price drove his Maserati 200 SI to overall and class wins in the Drum Brake Group on both Saturday and Sunday, and then took a pair of class wins driving his Ferrari 250 GTO in the Disc Brake Group. Lawrence Stroll was the overall winner in the Disc group on both Saturday and Sunday in his ex-Roger Penske/Sunoco Ferrari 512 M.
Price started on pole for Saturday's Drum race, but Peter Giddings, driving the ex-Whitney Straight Maserati 8CM, passed Price in Turn One of the first lap. Giddings, driving the oldest car in the field, maintained his lead until the last 100 feet of the race when Price passed to take the win. The margin of victory, .055 second, was the closest in series history. Bob Bodin finished third overall in a Ferrari 250 Tour de France berlinetta, taking a class win.
The grid for the Sunday was set by Saturday's results, so Price was again on Pole. This time he led every lap, challenged only briefly by Giddings, who suffered mechanical problems two laps from the finish. Second overall went to Chuck Wegner, also in a Maserati 200 SI. Bodin again finished third overall and took a class win.
In the Disc Brake group Stroll in his 512M took pole for Saturday over Jim Fuchs, driving a 512 BB/LM. An expected charge from Tom Hollfelder, also in a 512M, never materialized, and Stroll led every lap to win over Fuchs by almost five seconds. Fuchs, the points leader coming in to Road America, did take a class win. Price in his GTO took an easy class win over several other GTOs and 250 SWBs, taking the Disc group points lead in the 2006 Championship in the process. Chuck Wegner, now in his rare 196 SP, and Bob Benedict, 308 GT/M, were also class winners.
Stroll again led every lap in Sunday's race over Fuchs, and Price won the berlinetta class over Nick Colonna in one of the 250 SWBs. Wegner also repeated his class win from Saturday.
Stroll, Price and Fuchs are in a tight battle for the 2006 Disc championship. Peter LeSaffre had been close behind, but engine problems in his 250 SWB on Saturday did little to help his Championship plans.
Giddings leads the Drum standings, with LeSaffre close behind in a 250 Tour de France berlinetta. Peter Greenfield, who races an Alfa Romeo 8C/35 from the pre-war Scuderia Ferrari, remains in third in spite of missing Road America due to a schedule conflict.
The final event in the 2006 Shell Ferrari Historic Challenge will take place at Lime Rock Park on July 21-22.
