FORMULA GTi
Banished to the back of the grid for practicing without an engine cover gave Garth Waberski (Swift 92) plenty to do in Round 3 of the NGK Formula GTi Championship at Kyalami on Saturday.
Pole man Morne Jurgens(Swift 92) powered away from the line followed closely by Basil Mann (Riken Electric Swift) and Barry Ingle in the Acme Motori Swift 92, the pair closely followed by a gaggle of cars.
The jostling for position among this group allowed Jurgens to get away and he soon opened a sizeable gap on the rest of the field. Waberski, meanwhile was slicing his way through and had moved into seventh place by the second lap and was up to sixth a lap later.
With Jurgens well out in front Basil Mann held station in second place ahead of Ingle and Ron van Weely (Swift 92). Two laps later Waberski had forced his way through to third with Mann dropping back to fifth after running wide at the AA Kink.
Try as he might Waberski simply could not close the gap and had to settle for second behind Jurgens with Ingle third ahead of Ron van Weely. Basil Mann was fifth with Graham Vos sixth.
In the second race Jurgens proved his earlier win was no fluke and again blasted away from the line to lead the race from start to finish, despite the attentions of Waberski who, again, had to be content with second overall - and, with the 18 points scored in Cape Town in the opening rounds of the series, still comfortably in the lead of the championship.
Barry Ingle finished third ahead of Max Corte with Johan Smith fifth ahead of Gareth Rodd.
Malcolm Cochrane won the Class B battle in both heats, Willie Lombard and Robin da Silva each picking up a second and a third place finish for the day.
