MFMC: Series Utah weekend summary 2009-05-19

California rocket ship Chuck Hulse brought his #12 Silicon Salvage sponsored Pro Mazda into victory lane again this weekend at round six of the Molecule Formula Mazda Challenge at Miller Motorsports Park. Series sponsor Michael Guasch, who is only doing a partial MFMC schedule, was in for this event and as usual was in contention for the top spot having out qualified Hulse earlier in the day. World Speed Motorsports drivers Dave House and Stan Kohls rounded out the drivers qualified to run for MFMC points in the Star Mazda Series' Indy 500 sized field.

Chuck's Hulse father competed in the Indianapolis 500 in 1962, 1963, 1966 and 1967 and so it is possible that Chuck had some extra insight in to how to deal with 33 open wheel racers competing for victory in the month of May. Waiting side-by-side, Guasch and Hulse battled as soon as the lights set them loose. Kohls and House, who were only a row apart, also got right to work making headway through the field.

"It was exciting to have three different teams represented in the MFMC points chase at MMP," stated series official Ben Hettema. In the end one driver from each team made it to the podium. Hulse, in his Dave Freitas Racing machine, was able to hold off Guasch with a brave outbraking maneuver into turn one for the victory. He was followed closely by Guasch who is running this season with JDC, and the final step of the podium belonged to World Speed's Stan Kohls. Dave House, who had been in contention for a podium spot for most of the race, got into an on track altercation with the #64 car with only a couple of laps to go.

"It was great to get Stan on the podium for the second time at MMP. This is an incredible facility, and with the Star schedule, it was worth the travel - nearly 4 ½ hours of incident free track time. The drivers were able to be a part of field with future stars, and show off a bit for themselves. Nine of the racers that were at this event are Formula Mazda Challenge alumni including Billy Goshen the 2008 Star Winter Series Champion and Toshi Deki who secured the Star Expert Class win this weekend. All the guys did a great job, and we're looking forward to the next race at Thunderhill at the end of this month."

"Miller is a wonderful, flowing, high speed track that tests your nerves in practice and qualifying. Add a couple dozen young competitors and a race and it really gets exciting! Overall I had a great race - right up to those last few laps when I violated the cardinal rule by challenging Patrick."
