Buffomante Leads Ford Racing Mustang Challenge Opening Day at VIR
DANVILLE, VA. 22 April - Tony Buffomante led the time charts during the promoter test day at Virginia International Raceway on Thursday as the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge kicked off a debut appearance at the famed circuit ahead of Sunday's race. Buffomante's fast lap time of 2:08.814-seconds around the 3.27-mile natural terrain road course, set in the final session of the day, marked his quickest of the day as he also was atop the charts in the afternoon's two previous sessions.
"I wasn't really looking at the time sheets today, but it's great to be up top," said Buffomante. "The Capaldi Racing guys have been working hard--they must like it in their new shop! I'm just excited to be here, racing at such a real race track like this. I'm so happy that we get the chance to race here, VIR is a great facility and I love natural terrain courses. If it rains, I'm not too concerned because we can get the car dialed in no matter what the conditions are."
Championship points leader Jason von Kluge didn't have the day he was hoping for as an off-course excursion cost him track time for repairs to his JVK Motorsports machine after setting the third-fastest lap in the opening session.
"It was at the top of the esses and I got in there a little bit too hot so just got a little bit loose and I thought I had saved it for a second, but I went off so we had some damage," said von Kluge as he hustled to effect repairs ahead of Friday's practice sessions. "I like this track, so it's disappointing to not be out there running today but hopefully we can make up for it later this weekend!"
Series returning driver Ben Crosland showed strength on the timesheets as did "local" racer George Winkler of Fredrick Maryland after the former drag racer claimed a maiden podium result in round two at Homestead Miami Speedway.
The day's running also saw several new faces in the paddock and on the track, as Robert Korzen, David Rosenblum, Kyle Gimple all participated in the opening day. Friday will see two more practice sessions ahead of Saturday morning's qualifying session, with Sunday's green flag slated to fly at 12:45 PM.
